HB 71, sponsored by Delegates Luedtke and Frush, proposes to raise Maryland’s tobacco tax. This legislation also establishes a tax on cigarillos and increases the annual appropriation for activities aimed at reducing tobacco use in Maryland. Highlights:
Cigarette tax per pack would rise from $2.00 to $3.00 (50% increase).
Cigarillos would be taxed at the same rate as cigarettes.
In 2018, the annual appropriation used for, “activities aimed at reducing tobacco use in Maryland” would rise to $21,000,000 from $10,000,000.
There are more items in the bill, including changes in taxes on smokeless tobacco.
